Hannah Greeno / nee Herbert
Born 21st October 1892 ... Died 18th August 1969
This remembrance is sponsored by her Grandson in appreciation of the memories she gave him.
A few pictures of her:
Here she is holding up a chunky baby Slev for the world to see.
This photo was taken on one her visits to South Ockendon to visit her Son and Daughter in Law.
A word or two:
It is hard to think of Hannah as anything other than 'Nan.' As a kid, I didn't even know she had a name because everyone called her: Mum, Aunty, Great-Aunty, Nan, or whatever. But by watching my Grandad, I learned it was Hannah. He actually called her a bunch of other names too, but she held her own, so I was never really that sure of anyone's proper name.
The had a very loving relationship together, and they were always there for whoever needed help. When family was visiting them - which seemed all the time - they would entertain us with good natured arguments between themselves about something 'one or other of them' had done.
Her cooking was the best. She could do stuff with eels that was delicious. She would buy the live eels from a market in Hackney, and they would be swimming around in the bath tub until it was dinner time. I loved to go there on a Saturday and see the eels swimming in it. All her great recipes disappeared when she died five months after Tom.
After Tom died and she was on her own, she just wasn't the same. They'd been together so long that she had no desire to live without him anymore, and she fell asleep in her chair by the window one day and never woke up.
I can't think of how nice she was without becoming a little emotional. She was great to everyone.
