Catharina Mary Bolton / nee Hahn

Born 1st November 1909 ... Died 2nd March 1995

This remembrance is sponsored by her Grandson who didn't attend her funeral, but knows she doesn't mind.

Some pictures of her:

Here she is as a young 21 year old marrying her childhood sweetheart Leonard Doubtfire
on March 9th, 1930, at Stepney Church in London's Stepney Green.

This picture is taken at the photo booth in the Woolworths Department Store in Hackney in 1951, and shows a happy woman still very much in love.

Here she is having fun on the beach, burying her young Grandson Slev. (circa late fifties).

This picture is one of the last taken of her. It was her 85th Birthday party. She is waiting for the picture to be taken so she can start on the cake.

Catharina Mary Bolton / nee Hahn

A word or two:

We will say right up front that this woman was Slev's Grandmother (or one of them anyway). She was also a very nice person who is sorely missed by all. She lived her life the old fashioned way and enjoyed it to the fullest.

Catharina Mary Hahn grew up in North London's Finchley area. She later married her childhood sweetheart Leonard Doubtfire in 1930 when 21. Together they bought a house in Hackney and they proceeded to make it a happy home. Leonard was a painter & decorator, and he was always decorating the house. They bought a tortoise (named Joey) who had the free roam of the landscaped back garden they lovingly created. They also had two daughters: Kathleen Joan on April 9th, 1932, and Doreen Mary on March 11th, 1936. It seemed life was about as good as it could be for them both.

But no life goes by without suffering, and she had her share of the downsides too. While still a young woman, she was faced with grief at the early and untimely death of her husband. He kissed her on the cheek, (as he did every morning), walked down the front path to go to work, and only got as far as the top of the road and died suddenly from Thrombosis. As if that wasn't bad enough for her, the wonderful police department at Scotland Yard in London immediately proceeded to take away various cups, bottles, teapots and the like, for forensic examination because they suspected she might have actually poisoned him. Obviously she didn't and natural causes were determined, but it was doubly unpleasant there for a while.

As time passed by, she witnessed the loss of many of her near friends and relatives, but she always kept her chin up and a smile on her face. After a long period alone she later married Mr. Jack Bolton, a close neighbor who had consoled her over the years and made her happy. They took up ballroom dancing, went on camping trips, and despite several major operations for everything from brain aneurisms to arterial surgery, she retained a remarkably cheerful view of life. When Jack died a few years back in 1989, she was alone again, and she lived this way to the end.

Her final sleep came very suddenly when she had fatal heart attack while preparing herself something to eat late one night.

She is dearly missed by those who knew her, especially by her two daughters whose grief is the greatest. But the life and pleasure she gave to them can only make them both smile in her memory.
